Kresta put in a great drive on both days and moved up especially on Saturday. The driver of the Tescoma rally team got a puncture in the second SS and went down from 12th after the super SS to 73 place. Crowded banks applauded his fabulous drive. He was sixth after the last Satuday’s stage and today improved to 4th after some of his rivals did mistakes.
Kresta with co-driver Petr Gross drove a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX prepared by Charouz Racing System that was responsible also for Vaclav Pech’s car. Plzen based river finished third and took his fifth Czech championship. Both were dominant in the production class.
The rally was hit by a fatal accident. The 3rh SS saw a big crash of Opel Astra driven by Pavel Karlik. His co-driver Ludek Kocman sustained heavy injuries and died few hours later although the doctors did their best.
Roman Kresta: “I am very happy and satisfied. I enjoyed a great racing and got a good final position. Of course, I would like to be on the podium but fourth was absolute maximum after a puncture on Saturday morning caused a big gap to the front. My thanks to all Charouz Racing System technicians and mechanics for their good work our Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX was working very well. Some journalists and fans had said before the IRC debut in the Czech Republic that it would be a small world championship but I have to correct them – it is real world championship. Competition, organisation, fantastic spectators there were all things that made Barum as a world class event. Estimations are that there was about quarter of million spectators maybe it was even more than in 2003 when the WRC cars were at the top here. What else to say? I was driving as quickly as possible, fighting right to the end, so I did not do any spectacular things for the fans. I just waved sometimes. Flu that had hurt me a lot in previous days was a bit better today but I sweated a lot. Both for me and the Tescoma Rally Team / Charouz Racing System it is a positive finding that a production Mitsubishi is able to fight with S2000 specials. I would have been fighting for second if the puncture had not happened. I would have to be right on the edge but I would have been possible. I am really sorry about the fatal accident of Ludek Kocman and I express my deepest sympathy to his family.”
Antonin Charouz, manager: “Roman deserves big praise he drove faultlessly. Vaclav Pech drove also very well we prepare a car for him as well. It is a great success to be third in such competitive event and he also took the International Czech championship title. Roman’s pursuit must have entertained all the fans around he was amazing. I am proud that our team Charouz Racing System prepare the best production cars in Europe. Barum Rally Zlin confirmed it thanks to performances of both Roman and Vaclav. I also express my deepest sympathy to Ludek Kocman’s family.”
